The Story

Gerrit Thomas Rietveld

Three-seater Sofa for Metz & Co.

c. 1937

Wood, upholstery, mohair velvet

28.5”H x 71”W x 34”D

Courtesy of Formative Modern

Gerrit Rietveld (1888-1964) was a Dutch designer, architect and member of the De Stijl movement. De Stijl, meaning “The Style,” advocated for complete abstraction. Rietveld applied this concept to architecture and furniture, seeking to distill everyday objects to their structural basics. This sofa was a variation of an armchair Rietveld designed in 1936-1937, which was his first upholstered, comfort-conscious piece. Following his fascination with intersecting planes, Rietveld designed this sofa entirely out of right angles. Reupholstered in terracotta mohair velvet.
