The Story

Courtesy of Formative Modern

At the age of 24, Charlotte Perriand joined the design studio of Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret to contribute primarily to the creation of furniture for their architectural projects. This is one of the seating designs she created for them, to serve the purpose of relaxing. This design was unique in its movement as its name “chaise longue basculante” implies and in it’s potential to be manufactured at scale. This piece would go on to confirm Corbusier’s name, rather than Perriand’s, in the history of design and architecture. The example presented here is a rare, early model produced under license by either Wohnbedarf or Thonet. The base, a rust red and flesh-tone pink, are in original, heavily patinated condition. The seat has been restored with a stretched canvas while salvaging the original bungee cords and hardware underneath. The original sage green burnt-out floral velvet foot pad has been preserved and attached to the new canvas.
